Opulence, I has it
Treat yourself to a Pygmy giraffe, dogs that play poker(or that another game?), or a NASTC trip this year. What makes this commercial great is the attention to detail. Watch it slowly and you will pick out some interesting nuances. Live life slower and see what you notice.
Slow down this year and notice what you have been missing. Call NASTC(530-582-4772) for information regarding our next full immersion ski experience.

A change of seasons
Tuesday, October 12, 2010
Good Night Steve!
"One can never be bored by powder skiing because it is a special gift of the relationship between earth and sky. It only comes in sufficient amounts in particular places, at certain times on this earth: it last only a limited amount of time before sun or wind changes it. People devote their lives to it "for the pleasure of being so purely played" by gravity and snow.

Getting ready for ski season! Bikes are good, but dont forget the fundamentals.
Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the
Human race. H.G. Wells
Its impossible to get me off my MT. Bike in the fall and into the gym. However I know the key to season durability is to find the weak links and deal with them in prehab, so I don't face rehab halfway through the season. Total Skiing my new book due out Dec 12 will give anyone the tools to screen for fitness holes and tactics and technique flaws. Taking these suggestions will ensure you have a happy healthy ski season. Look for it and buy it!!
Thanks

Crested Butte Mt. Bike, Alone in the WOODS!!
Doest a tree make a sound when it falls in the woods, does a blog get read when in cyberspace? The only way to really understand the smell. the color, the texture and the feel of flying through peaking aspens in the high alpine of Colorado is to be there. Chris Rust and Bill Ellard hosted me for 4 days of primo mtbing last week. Nick Herrin joined in for a few rides and gave us a locals only visit to his favorite haunts. Dyke, Deer trail, 401, Strand and Hartland were a sampling how awesome this place is. An exciting and adventuresome trip that included confrontations with a fox, bull, herd of cows, hawks, ranchers, steep decents, knarly climbs tight switchbacks, slick rock like technicals, bow hunters, ATV's, sweeping single track through a sea of sage and cow patties. At the end we promised to return.

Portillo / NASTC Group Reinforce Why we Do This!
This years Portillo Chile / NASTC All Conditions All Terrain Camp was a reminder that these camps are about more than improving your skiing. The extremely positive attitude and drive to have fun from this years group reminded all of us that it is more than just skiing. Sports camps can be intimidating and create more doubt than confidence in ones mind, but when you are immersed in a positive environment like the one we had in Portillo this year, the vibe changes. Good on YA NASTC group!!! The result was a safe, fun week where learning was a product of adventure and exploration, not being taught.

Portillo 2010 : NASTC Portillo Team Rocks the Roca!
Nick, Dave, Jon, Dave, Marlin and Chris on the upper slopes of Roca. Great view of Aconcagua and the hotel below. The week was as much about enjoying a true ski vacation as it was about pushing limits, however all would agree that we had the perfect blend of both in this years NASTC at Portillo All Condition / All Terrain Camp. With only 400 guest skiing at the resort the private club atmosphere prevailed and we explored great terrain and and untracked snow, with out the push of crowds. The snow was not as deep as last year but great skiing was found with just a little more exploring. We are making plans for next years clinic already while the excitement of this years clinic still lingers. I do miss the Hotel Portillo bakery smell first thing in the morning and the sight of spinning chair lifts as my first sight of the day as I peak out my bedroom window. I challenge anyone to find a more perfect ski training venue in August.

J4 championships at Sugar Bowl
The Championships brought a new level of skiing out of each kid. It was really exciting to see the kids excel and learn the lessons of good sportsmanship and the fruits of hard work and tenacity. The transformations that took place over the season were many, but the ones that helped these kids learn the lessons of self confidence and self sufficiency were most impressive. Big congrats go out to the kids, coaches and parents! Very Impressive!!

Mammoth Mountain's Taylor Garcia wins J4 GS
Sugar Bowl hosted the J4 championships this week end and the skiing took on a new level of performance from 11-12 year olds. The photo of Garcia shows the speed, intensity and precision that these young racers are now achieving. Garcia beat some of the west coasts best GS skiers with flawless technique and tactics that combined with fearlessness won him first place. My congratulations goes out to all that competed this week. A job well done!!!

Zermatt, Switzerland
Another Euro ski fest first in Zermatt and then on the the Ortler in Italy. All skiers were in rear form, but I must say that Ingrid aka Christine was a bad little German girl. We crossed glaciers, climbed peaks and circumnavigated the Matterhorn. All in the spirit of the NASTC philosophy, a total immersion ski adventure. The team came from the far reaches of the planet to converge on the little ski hamlet know as Zermatt. Greg from Dubi, Sandy from Texas, Howard from SF, Elliot from Washington, Christine from the Black Forest, Ron from New York, Michael from France, Kim from Switzerland and Chris from Austria. The gang worked as a team as they navigated, with the help of UIAGM/IFMGA full certified guide Michael Silitch and Ski trainer/ NASTC director Chris Fellows through some of the most challenging terrain and conditions any NASTC camp has encountered. Kim Mann, Events coordinator for NASTC not only held down the social and logistical responsibilities, but helped with the on hill coaching. The team began to move like a Swiss clock by day 5 and we finished the week with a challenging ski down the Sunegga. As we said our goodbyes the guides and coaches began to pack for the next leg of the European ski fest.
